The exact question, the exact tree
Between 2 days after delivery and about 30 days — and the difference is not luck. It is a decision tree eBay publishes in pieces: your tracking, your price, and your category pick the branch. Most pages answering this question quote one number. There isn't one number. There are three.
Tell it about the first thing you plan to sell. It answers with the three numbers that decide your first month: what you keep, what fits under your new-account limits, and the date your money lands. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
The tree, whole
| Branch | Who lands here | How long | What moves you out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tracked & delivered | New sellers who ship with tracking on ordinary items | About 2 days after delivery is confirmed | You are already in the fast branch — stay here |
| Untracked | New sellers whose parcels carry no tracking, so delivery can never be confirmed | Up to 21 days (limited circumstances); terms allow up to 30 calendar days from the order date | Tracking on the very next sale |
| High-priced / high-scrutiny | Sales over $1,000, high-scrutiny categories, unusual selling patterns | Up to about 30 days | Time and a normal sales record — sell these in month two |
Two more published cases sit outside the tree: previously restricted sellers get holds for the 30 days after a restriction lifts, and items in eBay's Authenticity Guarantee can be held until authentication completes — also up to 30 days.
The “21-day hold” answer that ranks for this question is years old and was never the whole rule — it is one branch of three. And the fee figures beside it are often just as stale: many guides still print 13.25% as eBay's standard final value fee. As of October 21, 2026, eBay's own fee page puts most categories at 13.6%; 13.25% survives only for coins and select collectibles. Accuracy is the entire point of this site — if a number here ever goes stale, the dated rules page is where we correct it.
The First 30 Days Kit turns one decode into the whole month: the day-by-day calendar (limits, holds, when cash actually arrives), the First-10 listing worksheets, the hold-avoidance checklist, the limit-raise playbook for days 30/60/90, and the fee-proof pricing sheet for the common categories.

No. It is the ceiling for a specific situation — a new seller whose delivery cannot be confirmed — not the default. A tracked ordinary sale normally frees about 2 days after delivery, which for most first sales means roughly a week after the buyer paid.
Holds apply while you are a new or infrequent seller, sale by sale, until your record carries you to standard availability. It is a stage, not a sentence — and it ends fastest with tracked, on-time, problem-free sales.
Buyers do not confirm receipt to release your money — the carrier's delivery scan does. That is why the tracking number, not the buyer's goodwill, is the thing to protect.
